🚨 Who Should I Contact in an Emergency?
Need help? We’re here to point you in the right direction.
Sometimes it can be difficult to know whom to contact when you or someone you care about becomes unwell.
This page provides a simple guide to some of the services available to patients and residents in the Westhoughton, Blackrod and surrounding areas.
🔴 LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY
CALL 999
Call 999 immediately if someone's life is at risk.
Examples include:
❤️ Severe chest pain or suspected heart attack
🫁 Severe difficulty breathing
🧠 Signs of a stroke
🩸 Serious or uncontrollable bleeding
🤕 Serious injury
😴 Someone who is unconscious or cannot be woken
⚡ A seizure
🚨 Any situation where you believe someone's life is in immediate danger
Do not delay calling 999.
If appropriate, you can also attend your nearest A&E department.
🟠 URGENT MEDICAL HELP
Call NHS 111

If you need urgent medical help but it is not a life-threatening emergency, NHS 111 can help you decide what to do next.
You can also use NHS 111 online.
NHS 111 can:

Tell you where to get help

Arrange an appointment where appropriate

Direct you to an urgent treatment service

Advise you whether you need A&E

🌙 WHEN YOUR GP IS CLOSED
If you need urgent medical help when your GP surgery is closed and you cannot wait until it reopens:

NHS 111 can assess your needs and tell you what to do next.
If the situation is life-threatening, call 999.
🧠 MENTAL HEALTH EMERGENCY
A mental health emergency should be treated just as seriously as a physical health emergency.
🔴 Immediate danger?
Call 999 or go to A&E.
🟠 Need urgent mental health help?
Call NHS 111 and select the mental health option where available.
You can also tell NHS 111 if you are worried about someone else.
